Notes

I often introduce It's That Kind of Night as a true story, but considering it was written in 2002 about events that took place, sort of, in 1968, who knows what counts as "true?" That tends to be my lyrical pattern: I'll start with something that I remember as having actually happened, then re-imagine, embellish, exaggerate, change the names to protect the guilty... I always try to at least stick to the spirit of the original, and once in a while, the finished song actually falls pretty close to its roots.

Except for the harmonies It's That Kind of Night was recorded live in the studio, with Jeff Beckstrom manning the board. Unfortunately, RMC Recording doesn't have a single room large enough for all of us, so we were spread all over the house. Still, the goal was to make it sound like a band and I think we succeeded. Many thanks to Lance, Bill and Mark, and Jeff for getting it tracked.

Lyrics

The boys all say that I don't stand a chance
But I'm thinkin', if I ask you to, you'll dance
Am I right?
IT'S THAT KIND OF NIGHT.

You might be up for tryin' something new.
Or maybe not. Still, what harm could it do?
I don't bite,
And IT'S THAT KIND OF NIGHT.

It's a good night for starting something.
It's a good night for what might be.
It's the kind of night a girl like you
Could say, "What have I got to lose?"
And leave the dance with somebody like me.

If we linger on the path to talk a spell,
Will it all end with a kiss? It's hard to tell,
It just might,
IT'S THAT KIND OF NIGHT.

The boys all say that I don't stand a chance
But I'm thinkin', if I ask you to, you'll dance
Am I right?
IT'S THAT KIND OF NIGHT.
