Notes

Written in 1995 and recorded in 2004, 1000 Shades of Gray is one of the first songs completed at RMC Recording. Anyone who's lived through a Seattle winter knows what this is about. Somewhere in Febuary or early March, in the gloom of endless cloud cover and drizzle, all hope of ever again seeing a ray of sun is extinguished. We begin to grasp at any hint of a lighter shade of slate, and swear that it's a pretty nice day. This was written on one of those.

Many thanks to Jeff, Gary, Jeanne, Erin and Chris!

I must admit that I took some liberties in moving Chris' wonderful Tele lines around mad-scientist style, but I couldn't resist. He gave me SO much to work with and absolutely nailed the feel throughout. I'm still very pleased with how it turned out.

And yes, there's definitely more than a bit of Steely Dan in there. My buddy Joe Crowley sez that Donald Fagan is gonna hunt me down and sue my butt. So be it! The Dan remain amongst my all time faves, and the flattery is intended and definitely sincere!

Lyrics

I know, somewhere the sky is blue.
So I've been told, and I believe it's true.
Once you get past, out past this overcast.

Down here, the air is soaking wet,
And the sky's 'bout as low as it can get.
For days, seems like it's been the same,
And tomorrow, it'll be the same again.

So as the fog forms on my the window pane,
I sit alone and stare out at the rain.
Another day: A THOUSAND SHADES OF GRAY.

It's another day: A THOUSAND SHADES OF GRAY...

Seems like nothing ever changes,
Everything remains the same.
All these streets are filled with strangers,
Nameless faces, and faceless names.

So as the fog forms on my the window pane,
I sit alone and stare out at the rain.
Another day: A THOUSAND SHADES OF GRAY.

It's another day: A THOUSAND SHADES OF GRAY...
